In this passage there is a great debate over who Jesus is and what they should do about it. The people struggle over him being the messiah because they didn't really know where Jesus came from and the messiah was supposed to be from Bethlehem. The guards were supposed to arrest Jesus but they didn't because they were so amazed by his speech. They were yelled at by the pharisees, but even they were slightly divided about what should be done.
From this passage I can learn that it's good to investigate the word. It was good that the jewish people were looking into the scripture to check things. It's unfortunate that they didn't know all the facts before coming to a decision. We should work hard to know as much as we can before we make any strong decisions. It must've been amazing to hear christ speak if even the guards were amazed enough not to do what they were told. Surely there must've been something special about Christ.
