In this passage Jesus teaches about him being a shepherd. He teaches how a shepherds relationship with sheep is similar to ours with Christ. Jesus as the shepherd is going out to also find sheep that are his that aren't in his pen yet. The key to knowing if they belong to him is if they listen to his voice. Jesus teaching about these things made the people divided again. Some thought he was demon possessed and others realized that his healings wouldn't come from the devil. During the next feast the people were waiting to announce that he was the Christ. Jesus explains to them that it's not a matter of telling them it's a matter of their unbelief. Jesus again goes to the sheep analogy. Those that are his listen to him. Jesus will never lose them.
From this passage I can learn that hearing and obeying Christ is a very good indication if you're his or not. We're lucky to be his. To have someone good watching over us is very comforting. This passage is also a proof that we can't lose our salvation. I think there are sheep that follow other sheep but aren't really his sheep. They just kind of look like it and hang out among the others. But in the end God will sort out who's who. When that happens we'd better be sure that we're on his side. It seems like the peoples unbelief is much the same as it is today. There's plenty of evidence they simply don't believe/hear his voice. Hopefully one day they do. And it's part of our jobs to search for Christs sheep as well.
