In this passage it seems as though jesus is saying some shocking words to those who are listening to him. He describes judgment of the dead as very black and white. There's no middle ground. He validates his ministry through John the baptist. Everyone seemed to respect him a lot so his testimony was valid. Jesus doesn't need his testimony, but for the sake of those listening he uses it. He also uses the work he's doing for the father as testimony. There is no life in the study of scripture itself if you don't follow it correctly.
Jesus tells it like it is. He doesn't give two ways about it. We have to be careful how we live our lives because judgement will come and be exact. Lucky for some of us that we have Jesus testifying for us. His testimony is most important, but we should also use what we do to testify for our lives as well. We should also study the scripture well, but we must be careful not to miss the main point. When people harden their hearts because they think they know something that can get them into all kinds of trouble. Better to be humble before God and live by scripture.
