1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
-It is a very very very great love that we have from the Father. This is no small thing at all. It's like imagining that we are suddenly part of the richest family in the world. But even that pales in comparison to being in God's family.
2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
-What happens when we go to heaven isn't completely sure, but there will be some sort of transformation. When God comes we will see him. That is exciting.
3Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.
-If we really believe this we will do our best to purify ourselves. It's like when we think santa is coming. We do so much as kids to be good for him.
4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.
-This is the legal problem of mankind. We sin so much and break God's law.
5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
-God's purpose was to take away our sin. There's many ways he might have done it, but really there's only one way that he did do it. Jesus wasn't sinful at all. He was the perfect sacrifice for us.
6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
-As we live for him we get more sanctified. We grow in him and sin less. If we have no regard for sin then it's proof that we are not saved.
-How great God's love is for us.
