16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
-Jesus was the example of love for us. Now we should be following that example. What a nice world this would be if we all did this. Selfishness is such a bummer.
17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
-God has pity on us all the time. Getting ahead is so important in our society. Unfortunately leaving people behind is alright as well.
18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
-Action and truth. This is what we need. This is the test. Not just saying and discussing, but doing.
19This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence 20whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
-Usually we know. We aren't ignorant of that many things. Our hearts condemn us so often and we usually try to turn it off. It's to bad. These chapters are full of how we can know. How we can tell where we're at.
