18We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him.
-Continue is the key word here. People born of God change over time to become more holy. Although we may struggle with sin, we fight and God fights with us to overcome it. God is at work to keep us safe.
19We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.
-When we look at the world we must realize who the ruler of it is. We can't be so blind to how the world works and what its purpose or desire for us is. If we walk thru a land owned by the enemy in war we will walk thru it carefully and cautiously so we won't get killed.
20We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
-This is also something we should know. We realize from what we know that we really do have some sort of understanding. From this we realize what is true and what isn't.
21Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
-Final words. It's so easy to fall for them. We must be on our guard not to worship worthless things. Keep our eyes on God.
