-In this passage the Israelites are trying to get to the bottom of who is responsible for Israels recent failures. They go tribe by tribe, family by family, and so on till God weeds out who the sinful person is. It turns out to be Achan. He confesses to coveting some clothes and money that they were supposed to destroy. They take him, all his posessions, and his family and stone them and burn all of it.
-From this I can learn how serious sin is and also that sin should be taken care of very seriously. In this case it wasn't a joke at all because it had led to the deaths of many Israelites. When we think of sin and getting rid of it, it is a total purge from our lives.
