-In this passage Israel scouts out a city and prepares to siege it. They take note of how many people they will need to defeat it. In their fight against it they ended up losing and having some men killed. As a result Joshua comes before the Lord questioning and doubting their purpose their. As he prays the Lord asks him what he'd doing and reveals to him that the reason they lost was because someone had disobeyed the Lord. God says he won't be with them till the sin is destroyed.
-I can learn from this passage that obedience is so important. It could almost be a theme here. Follow simple instructions. Don't lean on your own understanding, but trust God. He will make it work for you. When you live by your own selfish desires, it doesn't work. The loss had little to do with strategy, but a lot to do with relationship with God. Once that is compromised everything else crumbles. We have to learn to be faithful to God and trust him. Hidden sin in this case effects the whole nation. We think we can get away with something, but it doesn't always work that way. We need to get hidden sin our of our hearts. Not just for ourselves, but for the body of believers.
