16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
-Crucifixion was obviously the method of death for Jesus. It was commissioned by Pilate.
17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
-Very ominous place. Jesus carried his own cross, just as we should carry ours. It was a difficult task for him. We must remember that as we carry our crosses. It is difficult, but Christ will help us with our burdens.
18 Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
-Wonder what they did to be crucified.
19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
-Nice note. It could've been worded so many different ways, but for some reason it was what it was and there was truth in it.
20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
-Pilate wanted everyone to know this. Wonder why he was so complete in displaying this message. Obviously God wanted all to know.
21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews."
-Protest vs the sign of course. Pilate probably wrote it on purpose to spite the gentiles
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
-Very strong in his position.
