7What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."
-law is not sin, only tells u what sin is. It would be easy to confuse since when paul was talking he was always putting sin and law in the same sentence. But again. the law only informs you that what you are doing is bad.
8But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.
-Its like wanting to push the shiny red button. when you know what sin is its tempting to do it even more to some degree. if you can kill the law with grace then sin has no power anymore. What the law did in making you unrighteous, grace reverses that. It's an amazing thing to think about. under God's grace we can do no wrong in some sense.
9Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.
-Suppose this is just theoretical. When you know the law, either by reading it or conscience, then you are trapped by death.
10I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.
-People thought that obeying the law would bring righteousness and eternal life. In actuality, the law only brings judgment to yourself. Its a sad thing to think about. So many people living thought that if they could just obey good enough, then they would be righteous. In actuality, the more laws they were trying to follow, the more sinful they'd become.
-We really need to learn to turn to God's grace. It's so big to think about, but its so real. God loves us so much and offers forgiveness, but we need to repent and also forgive ourselves. The power of the cross is meaningless unless we accept it. our poor minds are able to keep us from true forgiveness.
