In this passage people think John might be the messiah. John makes a clear distinction between him and what the messiah would be like. John only baptises with water, the messiah will baptise with the Holy Spirit. The messiah will come with powerful judgment. He is on a whole different level than John. John was preaching the good news of the messiah. This effected the people. This is the power of Christ. He comes and separates people with his life. This is what he does in our lives as well. He bears our heart and moves us into storage or into fire.
John also rebuked Herod of his sinful lifestyle. This got him into all kinds of trouble but he did it because he saw evil. This is a scary thing to do in the life of others. John was faithful to see that his leaders lived right. Our world is so corrupt with evil in our leadership. How to call them out I'm not sure but prayer is a good step.
