In this passage there is more hard words to the corinthians from paul. the people must've thought to highly of themselves and there was argument over who the greater followers were. Paul clearly states that he is a servant who's job is to reveal mysteries that Christ has revealed. since he was given that job he has to be faithful to it. he's not worried about how others judge him. it was interesting to me how he used conscience in here. he mentions that it is clear to him but that that doesn't matter in the end cause it is God's judgement that matters. lots of people use that excuse that they're not burdened by their conscience so its all good. although it may be a good indicator, it isn't a hard fact nor should we use that as an excuse for sin. in the end God judges.
Pauls advice to not go beyond what was written was wise advice even for us today. people stretch things beyond what the intent was. we need to be especially careful that our interpretation isn't out of line. the people did this to gain position. we shouldn't do this for our own comfort of for our own power. the people of the time lived their Christianity in luxury of sorts while paul and others suffered. there will be a time for celebration and joy, but now is a time for work and labor.
Paul does a scary job of putting them back in line. i would've been scared of him.
