In this passage Zechariah is given the word of God. His message to the people is to return to God. If they do this God will return to them. Apparently the peoples' forefathers were wicked and they received a similar warning. They did not listen and were punished accordingly. This is the same fate that awaits the people if they don't listen.
This is what much of the Bible speaks to us. There are so many stories of people that sin and don't repent and get into all kinds of messes in life. We need to learn from history. History is so clear and the right path is maybe to obvious. We should listen to the same advice. Return to God and he will return to us.
