In this passage Amos speaks against Israel. He basically says since God has chosen them he disciplines them. Then he goes on to some rhetorical questions where the idea is simply that things don't just happen, there is something or some plan that sets them off. The things that are going to or have happened to them are going to be revealed by Amos.
Being part of God's family also means that we'll be disciplined according to what we've done. All though the world seems to get away with everything while we get disciplined, this is for our good. The world just continues to grow in their corruptness while we are disciplined into righteousness. Thank God that he loves us enough to change us.
