53When Jesus had finished these parables, he moved on from there.
-Whew...kingdom parables are finally done.
54Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?" they asked.
-Must've been nice to visit home.
-People being surprised at his wisdom and powers probably means that Jesus was a relatively normal kid growing up.
55"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas?
-It's hard to believe when its someone you know. The blessing of knowing Jesus well turns out to be a curse in some sense. They couldn't believe in him.
56Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"
-They married into his family with his sisters. This is how close he was to them.
-Maybe some jealousy of his power or teaching?
57And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown and in his own house is a prophet without honor."
-Offense is a very strong reaction. It's to bad they couldn't accept him.
58And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
-The lack of faith hurt the ability to do miracles. I wonder if this was heart breaking for Jesus.
