17Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;
-Calling people out. Keeping them accountable for who they claim they are.
-Bringing out the law and how it relates them to God.
18if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;
-Again more relationship between the law and what they know.
19if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,
-More accountability to what they claim. They claim that they are teachers for those who know less.
20an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—
-The know law in their heads and they believe it to be correct.
21you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?
-Now he puts it in their faces that they are hypocrites. And they are in all areas. Its an extremely difficult thing to be humbled when people grossly disobey the law.
24As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."
-Their hypocrisy is so bad that even non Jewish people talk bad about God. This is a terrible crime.
-This is probably much the same about the church. The church is so wicked and hypocritical in many ways that even those outside the church talk bad of God. This isn't a good situation to be in and we should watch ourselves that we don't lead others astray in matters such as these.
