Luke 3:1-6
In this passage John the baptist is introduced. He is put in time by a long history of many names to identify the exact time and place in which he lived. In some ways it seems excessive to do this, but it is good for us so that we can see how truthful his writings were. HIs purpose was simple and it was to preach repentance for forgiveness of sins. That is something that we fail to do sometimes. Really get at the root of repentance. We pray the forgiveness prayer, but we don't really get at repenting. This was all to prepare the way for Jesus. Getting these peoples heart ready so that they could receive a savior. I wonder if there were many that repented before John but missed Jesus? Either way it seems much the same mission we have today. Bring sinners to repentance so that they can see Jesus. It's hard to break the way of sin, but with God's help all things are possible. God gives work for each of us to do. Some of it is bigger scale like John, but many people in the Bible just do small things but they are faithful to do them. Hopefully we can be faithful to do the things we're put in charge of.
