1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.
-Private now public instruction. Jesus was a busy guy constantly doing his fathers work.
2When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples 3to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?"
-From prison John wasn't exactly sure what Jesus was all about. Wish we knew what John was expecting of Jesus. Maybe he was expecting him to be an earthly leader as many Jews expected the messiah to be.
-Maybe he was wondering why he was still in prison if Jesus was the messiah.
4Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:
-Jesus' answer is to tell him what Jesus is doing. Miraculous healings are part of the proof of Jesus. His teaching is also proof.
5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosyare cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
-All these things are radically miraculous.
6Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me."
-The life of Jesus forces people to make a decision. Will they believe him or deny him? The person that chooses Jesus is blessed.
7As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind?
-Before John's disciples leave to go report to John Jesus does something here to commend John and his ministry.
8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.
-John was not great/worth seeing because of his status, power, riches, fame.
9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:
" 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
-John's purpose was specific and important. Jesus brings emphasis to this. He doesn't dump John off to the side because he is in jail, but he recognizes him.
-Jesus doesn't forget about us either.
