5Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them."
-more of the same idea. Live by the law die by the law.
6But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7"or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).
-This is not for man to do to attain righteousness.
8But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming:
-What man must do is in the word. We must have faith in it.
9That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
-This is what it takes for us to attain righteousness. Not go to heaven or cross the see, but to believe in Jesus.
10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
-Takes both. The mouth proves the heart. The heart is what we really need to believe with. We need to believe it with everything we are.
11As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
-Shame is one of the great worries of faith. What will the world think? what will friends think? what will family think? But God will take care of us as we believe.
12For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,
-God doesn't play favorites with those who are his. Nobody is positionally better. We must remember that as receivers and as administers of the word. Give freely to all. Don't discriminate. Love everyone.
13for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
-Everyone. We should give the word equally to anyone who will listen. Sometimes we judge to much or stereotype to much. Anyone can be saved. We should also have faith in this when we speak to anyone.
