Wednesday, Dec 17- Matthew 16:13-28

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
-Good question on perspective. Can test the knowledge of the disciples with this question.
-Jesus is referring to himself as later versus tell us.
14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
-So there must've been a lot of talk about who the son of man might be. Nobody's conclusive on this, but they all have different ideas.
-Seems like how a lot of knowledge about religion is. There is a lot of ideas, but nobody is sure.

15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
-Now the question becomes more direct. It doesn't matter what others think, the important question is personal knowledge.

16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
-Simon answers the question correctly.

17
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
-Jesus compliments him on a good answer. He gives insight on how he knew this.
-This is the same means by how we know God. We should realize how blessed we are to be in the position that we're in.

18And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
-Jesus names Peter and tells him his purpose.
-I'm sure Jesus names us as well and gives us purpose.

19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
-The amount of authority Jesus gives to peter is amazing.
-We are much the same.
20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
-Interesting that he always does this. Maybe because the people weren't ready to hear this truth yet.

21
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
-After recognizing who Jesus was, he begins to explain his purpose or plan.
-There's nothing left to surprise, and they'll see what kind of prophecy this is as they live the history.
-Everything is in God's plan, even suffering is with purpose and not out of God's control.

22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!"
-Peter doesn't want this to happen to Jesus. Very fitting response from a friend.

23
Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."
-God's plan is greater than mans plan. Avoiding God's plan is following satans plan.
-Even the best intentions apart from God's plan is disaster.
-Follow God's plan even when it defies logic.

24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
-Peter must deny his own desire to follow Jesus. Even his desire to protect a friend must be put aside when the friend must suffer for God.

25For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
-Powerful statement of how to live life. Don't make the mistake of missing this.

26
What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
-Rhetorical question. It will be no good, and he can give nothing. So don't miss this point.
-Plenty of men have gained the world and lost their souls for nothing.

27
For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.
-The works we do are important.

28
I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
