Tuesday. Dec 16- Matthew 16:1-12

1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.2
-Always the same group of people testing Jesus. They always come with funny questions, requests, and traps.

He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' 3and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
-Jesus uses the example of being able to tell the weather to explain signs. He doesn't need to give a sign because it has already been given. They just need to look to see it.

4
A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.
-Sign will be Jesus death and resurrection.

5
When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread.
-Something easy to forget i suppose. If they forgot bread they probably became hungry.
-We probably forget spiritual food a lot.

6
"Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
-They need to watch out for the teachings of the p&s.
-Sometimes when we're hungry we take spiritual food from anywhere.

7They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread."
-Who knows what they were thinking, but they were thinking the wrong thing about what Jesus meant.

8Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread?
-Not talking about physical bread.

9
Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
-Jesus points to the 2 miracles of bread.
10
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?
-I was kind of wondering if Matthew intentionally put both stories in. Apparently he did because he mentions it here. Both of those stories are so similar and its weird that the disciples would have the same lack of faith twice.

11How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." 12Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
-Thinking about Jesus' bread, it was abundant and plentiful for all to eat.
