Sunday, Dec 21- Matthew 17:24-27

24After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
-Jesus' opponents try to get him down through spiritual attacks, intellectual attacks, and now they try through financial means.
-They don't necessarily attack the leader who knows the answer, but weaker members.

25"Yes, he does," he replied.
-Did Peter really know the answer at the time? He's the type just to open his big mouth and answer.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak.
-Jesus probably saves Peter from putting his foot in his mouth.

"What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?"
-Guess Jesus saying that he is a king and is exempt along with peter from taxes.

26
"From others," Peter answered. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him.
-The answer makes sense that the king would allow his closest to be exempt.

27"But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."
-Even though Jesus doesn't need to pay taxes he does anwyays. And he does so in a miraculous way.
-Not only does he pay the taxes he shows his overwhelming control over the whole universe. He basically shows his power as God. Who else could have this kind of authority over nature?

-When the traps of the enemy comes we need to trust in Jesus to have the answers and give the answers.
