1After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
-These were the people in Jesus' inner circle.
-Decided to spend time and show these few something that was not for the other disciples.
2There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
-Became heavenly. Perhaps he showed this to them to show them things to come and who he really was. They just mentioned previously that he was the son of God.
3Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
-All star crew.
4Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
-Peter trying to be hospitable. Who knows what to say when something like this happens. I would've probably said something much dumber.
5While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
-God speaks. If meeting moses and elijah wasn't enough. God's short statement says a lot.
-Tells who he is. Son
-Tells his state before God: God loves him. God is pleased with him.
-Tells us what we should do: listen to him
6When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
-No fear with moses/elijah. Very different reaction with God.
7But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."
-Common also when meeting God. Someone telling them not to be afraid.
-If we have Jesus as our advocate before God we need not be afraid.
8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
-Was it a dream? Strange way for them to end their meeting.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
-Again, more secretive instruction from Jesus. The world/other disciples/etc aren't ready for this yet. What a secret to keep to themselves.
-Jesus being raised from the dead was clearly told to them. Still must've been hard to believe/understand
10The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
-Asking about prophecy.
11Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things. 12But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
-Jesus basically saying the prophecy of Elijah already had passed.
-Jesus give more allusion to the suffering that would come to him.
-Amazing in some sense that the disciples were surprised at all of Jesus suffering. He speaks about it so clearly and so many times.
-Just as much, the Bible is clear about our suffering as well. We should be expecting it. In the same way we expect it we should expect good to come of it as well. Suffering produces character, character hope.
