8If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
-Compared to a perfect God even the slightest imperfection makes all the difference in the world. Some people claim to be good enough. In this case back when John was writing it probably had to do with the gnostics believing they were without sin because it was part of the flesh. In our case maybe this can have to do more with us not taking the time to recognize what is and isn't sin in our lives. We overlook things far to easily. This is a deception that could seriously harm us.
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
-This is the result of recognizing our sin before Christ. Confession only happens when we realize what we've done. God is just in forgiving...that is thru Christ. God is also faithful in forgiving...that is from his gentle kindness as a father.
-It's a mind boggling thing to be forgivin like that.
10If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
-It's very straight forward. It's one way or no way. There are points that the Bible is very clear on. We must hold to these and not compromise on these points. God has no place in us if we can't recognize sin in our lives.
-Step back, take time to recognize sin for what it is. We can't keep sugar coating or hiding sin that we want to hold on to. We are fools for living this way.
