Wednesday January 28- Matthew 8:23-27

23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him.
-Well, Maybe he said some of the stuff before because he was saying it as he was leaving.

24Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.
-Nothing was to odd about a boat trip, but Jesus seems to attract a lot of storms when he's on the water. This was a serious storm if waves were sweeping over the boat. I think of Deadliest Catch where the waves are going over the boat. That is an intense situation.
-It's amazing in itself that Jesus was asleep during all of this. Was he exhausted? A heavy sleeper?

25The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
-They must have been desperate if they would wake him to ask him to do this. They thought they were going to die. This was a very serious storm. All their options were exhausted.
-Maybe the storm gets us to the point where all are options are gone and only God is left. Then we go to him in humility asking for help.
-I'm sure the disciples tried everything they knew how to do to get out of the storm.

26He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
-It's interesting that this is a faith issue. To the disciples this must seem like a normal event of life where things just happen to get out of control. But I suppose even in the most out of control moments faith is what we need.
-Lack of faith can lead to fear.
-God is in control of all situations. Even ones that seem natural.

27The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
-Without the storm the disciples don't learn this lesson.
-This lesson strengthens their faith.
-We need to be amazed by Jesus.
