18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.
-The more I read the Bible the more I see that Jesus liked to cross the lake :P
-Maybe he needed space. Maybe it was just time to move on.
19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
-Usually the teachers were the "bad guys". It makes you wonder if this guy had honest intentions or evil ones. Regardless, it was a big offering that this guy was making.
20Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
-Jesus usually gets to the heart of the issue, or the heart of the person. For this man he had to deal with some sort of security in having a home. Maybe it was to much for this teacher of the law to follow, but who knows we don't really know what happens so maybe he does give it all up to follow.
-The path that Jesus takes is a difficult one. He goes where God tells him. We must live with the same kind of faith. It doesn't seem as though it's everyone's calling to be homeless, but if that's what it takes then so be it.
21Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
-Seems like a reasonable request.
22But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
-I guess this chance doesn't come very often. Maybe Jesus would never come back to this region again. Maybe Jesus saw into this mans heart and saw that he might not really want to leave. Or that putting the home in order might take weeks or months. -When Jesus calls we have to go.
-There's nothing like giving everything to follow the Lord.
