Sat, Nov 29 - Psalms 12

1 Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men.
-Kind of an odd cry for help. Usually you'd expect an cry for help because of oppression or violence meant for someone, but this help is on account of no godly people.
-Do we care this much about the existence of godly people around us? Reminds me of Abraham speaking with God about sparing Soddom over a few godly people.

2
Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.
-A description of the godless. First identifier: lies. Second: flattery.
-What an evil people when everyone speaks for their own good. Seems familiar to our world in many cases.

3
May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue 4 that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips —who is our master?"
-The "who is our master?" alludes to the fact that these people are their own Gods. This is offensive to David and thus a right punishment to deny the king is an extreme one. This isn't something that we take into our own hands, but we allow the Lord to do.

5
"Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them."
-Psalm changes tone and the Lord speaks.
-The Lord declares just protection over the weak and needy.
-Comforting that the Lord looks over us and protects us from the evil of this world. But, we need to learn to groan and cry out because of lies and flattery in this world. This is evil and we need to learn to feel oppressed by it.

6
And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.
-Again a change of pace. David now reflects on the word of God as he often does.
-He sees this as a source of hope in dark times.
+Do we look to the word of God as an absolute hope?

7
O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever.
-Again, back to the main theme. David looks for refuge from evil people and declares that the Lord is the one to protect.
+We need to look to God

8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.
-What is vile that we honor today? What reason do we give the wicked to freely strut about?
-What do we honor that is vile to God?

+We need to rethink and allow our hearts to be broken for the things God cares about.
